Move Over Tim Curry! Stephen King’s New Pennywise Is As Terrifying As Ever

Stephen King’s It remake was almost shelved when director Cary Fukunaga dropped off the project last year. Despite the setbacks, it’s looking like It may still happen. Andres Muschetti, who directed the creepy horror flick Mama, jumped on board and has since released a chilling sketch of It’s infamous villain Pennywise.

Muschetti released the little sketch on Instagram, and it went relatively unnoticed, but why? Does anyone realize how absolutely terrifying the clown looks? This is a far, far cry from Tim Curry‘s Pennywise in the ABC miniseries. Curry’s hair was an obvious wig and yes, he was creepy, but this is straight up terrifying. Look at the plume of fiery hair and that mouth. What is that mouth?

This looks way, way more like the clown from American Horror Story: Freak Show, which was what we personally believed Pennywise should have been more like.

Look at Twisty the clown (terrifying).

Then look at Pennywise. Sure, he’s scary because he’s a clown, but seriously kind of hokey.

Recently, It cast Bill Skarsgård (The Divergent Series: Allegiant) as Pennywise. It’s a bold move considering Curry was 44 years old when he originally played the clown and Skarsgård is much, much younger. A younger, classically handsome clown could add a sort of cold-hearted, charming, sociopathic killer vibe that maybe Pennywise was previously missing. Don’t get us wrong, Tim Curry was an excellent Pennywise, but in a remake, it’s cool to see a different take on such a deranged character. We love Tim Curry, but younger, modern audiences might not understand the slightly psycho Ronald McDonald vibe Curry had. They’re used to much more graphic horror.

It will be a two-part series as Stephen King’s book clocks in at a whopping 1,100 pages. There’s no word on when the film will be released because of all the setbacks, but it definitely looks like it’s shaping up to be absolutely terrifying.
